Korean dramas have skyrocketed in popularity internationally in recent years. While “typical” K-dramas will focus on romantic relationships, that doesn’t mean romance is the only theme. K-dramas run the gamut of genres, from romance to action to supernatural thrillers. No matter what genre someone is into, they can find a handful of K-Dramas that will keep them entertained.

This is true even for those who enjoy more fantastical elements included in a story as many enjoy in anime. Filled with fantasy, sci-fi, and all kinds of wonderful elements that would be hard to do in anything other than animation, anime can feel very different from a K-Drama. However, there are a handful of K-Dramas that would make great anime.

10/10 The love story out of this world

my love from the star

My love from the star it has a little bit of everything K-dramas are known for, including an ill-fated romance, supernatural people, and a hint of reincarnation. An alien landed on Earth in Joseon in 1609, lost his return ship, and has to wait 400 years to return home.

The human-alien love story of My love from the star It already sounds like something from an anime and the animation could give the alien an alien appearance along with his almost perfect human form. His abilities and the situations he and his love interest find themselves in could also be improved.

9/10 A love that rises

The legend of the blue sea

The legend of the blue sea

If viewers are looking for a story that blends ancient periods with modern society through traditional myths, then they should turn to the Legend of the Blue Sea. It follows a love between a mermaid and a human that ends terribly and is destined to repeat itself.

The supernatural aspect of the love-seeking mermaid is great anime material and the betrayal within the story will keep anyone hooked. An anime version could more closely explore the nature of the mermaid and reincarnation.

8/10 A revived school drama

we are all dead

Cast of We Are All Dead

Originally created as a webtoons comic we are all dead It would be a great K-Drama to make into an anime. The show follows a class of high school students as their town is quickly overwhelmed by zombies caused by an outbreak that started inside the school.

Things could easily be expanded on in an anime, with no limitations on the number of actors and costumes, so the zombie hordes could be depicted as bigger. Also, zombie-human hybrids could really shine in the world of anime and could have cooler abilities.

7/10 when worlds collide

W: two worlds apart

w two worlds

W: two worlds apart it is perfectly set up to become an anime. W it has two main stories: one is the story of a famous author and illustrator creating a webtoon, and the other is the story of the webtoon itself. The webtoon that becomes its own world and people transition from the real world to the webtoon world is the perfect plot for an isekai anime. Not to mention, the story of an expert marksman on a mission for justice within the webtoon would make for an excellent story.

6/10 Team up to steal a dollar

Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area

Money Heist Korea Economic Area

Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area takes place in an alternate Korea where North and South Korea are close to reunification. A group of people with special abilities plans to carry out a big heist in the shared economic zone between the two countries.

An anime of this story would be action-packed with gunfights between the criminals and the police. The tense moments of computer hacking, hostage terrorizing, and the mystery of the mastermind behind it all could be super dramatic. The political turmoil of the merged countries would also make an excellent story element.

5/10 Sometimes family can be the biggest threat

Vicenzo

Vicenzo

Vicenzo took the Korean TV scene by storm in 2021. The main character was adopted by a gang when he was young, but instead of a Korean gang or something closer like the Yakuza, he is adopted by an Italian mafia family.

VicenzoThe view of gang life from the point of view of the mafia would be a new look for anime. Also, Vincenzo is not just a mafia soldier, but someone who offers advice to the mafia boss and is extremely smart. The betrayal of his adoptive family and the legal drama elements could make the anime grip the viewers.

4/10 The kingdom is on the verge of defeat

Kingdom

Distribution of the Kingdom

Kingdom is a fantastic K-Drama that combines history, political drama, and horror in an excellent way. During a time of great difficulty in the Joseon period, a new threat pushes the Korean people into a corner as the dead begin to rise and devour the living.

The Joseon period would look beautiful in animation, and zombies could look much scarier in anime than they already do in K-Drama. An anime version could lean more on combat against the undead hordes while staying true to the exciting story.

3/10 It’s not home sweet home

Sweet Home

Sweet Home

Like a post-apocalyptic horror, Sweet Home follows a group of tenants from the same building trying to survive when people start turning into monsters during a lockdown. Cha Hyun-soo, a high school student, merges with the monster within himself and gains superhuman abilities.

Sweet Home has some dark elements that would blend well with the anime aesthetic, somewhat similar to horror in tokyo with the protagonist being part monster. The darker themes of survival and mental health crises would also appeal to a more adult audience and make for some solid anime.

2/10 Remember my name

My name

My name title card

Released in October 2021, My name is an action-packed series that follows Yoon Ji-woo, who joins the Dongcheon gang and infiltrates the police in an attempt to get revenge on the person who killed his father. The story is full of violence, drama and betrayal.

My name it would be a great anime aimed at adults with its more mature themes. The trope of children avenging their parents is common among hero stories, but having a female lead puts a nice new spin on the idea. The crime noir theme would also be an anime that would stand out from the crowd.

1/10 This competition is not just a game

squid game

Squid Game characters preparing to fight in another game
