The brilliance of Darkest Dungeon 2 is it gives you (almost) everything that went well in the original while incorporating new mechanics almost seamlessly. That’s all I can ask from a sequel, as DD2 is makes welcome you with open arms, only to frustrate you with challenges the next second – but in a good way! Here are some of the most important changes in Darkest Dungeon 2 compared to the original.

You can’t miss in Darkest Dungeon 2

One change in Darkest Dungeon 2 that should make fans happy is the removal of the accuracy system. In Darkest Dungeon, players could miss attacks due to RNG, which was very frustrating. In Darkest Dungeon 2, attacks will always hit unless an enemy has a buff or a party member has a debuff. This makes the game fairer and allows the player to utilize strategy without worrying about RNG screwing them over.

Altar of Hope is replacing ‘village’ in Darkest Dungeon 2

Altar of Hope is a place where you spend skill points you’ve gathered during your runs. Those skill points are called Candles of Hope. In Altar of Hope, you’ll upgrade your stagecoach, improve heroes’ skills, unlock items, and more. To be honest, I miss the village from the original game.

Campaign Length of Darkest Dungeon 2

Both Darkest Dungeon and its sequel are roguelike games, but they handle this mechanic differently. In the first game, players would have a rotating cast of characters they would need to manage and a town hub they could upgrade. In Darkest Dungeon 2, players are limited to their characters to a party of four. While the original encouraged longer runs, Darkest Dungeon 2 has much shorter campaigns and runs.

Graphic improvements in Darkest Dungeon 2

Perhaps the most specific change is the transition from 2D to 3D. Darkest Dungeon II takes the first game’s beautiful and dark art style and has expertly given it an overhaul. It combines 3D models with gorgeous hand-drawn backgrounds to create a unique look. This change in graphics gives Darkest Dungeon 2 a new look that builds on the original game and lets it stand independently.
