A reimagining of the classic survival horror game, Alone in the Dark, is nearing its release, set for PlayStation 5 on October 25th. The team behind the project, Pieces Interactive, has shared an in-depth walkthrough of the game through a spotlight and demo video, promising both old and new players a modern yet faithful experience from the original title. New details about the title have been revealed on file A recent PlayStation Blog highlight.

The project is directed by Mikael Hedberg, known for his work on horror classics Amnesia: The Dark Descent and SOMA, with creature designs by Guy Davis, well-known collaborator of acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro. The team’s commitment to the game’s legacy and vision for the remake set Alone in the Dark as an exciting re-imagining of the genre’s seminal work.

The game retains the core elements of the survival horror genre, including challenging puzzles and clues for players to solve. It offers varying degrees of difficulty levels that cater to different players’ preferences, with some levels providing less help for those looking for a rigorous challenge, while others offer more instruction.

Pieces Interactive unveiled this new vision of Alone in the Dark through an 11-minute video stream, introducing the voice talents, showcasing the gameplay, stories, and exploring the game’s haunting sonic landscape. The stream also revealed a playable prologue, giving players a sneak peek into the full game’s horrors.

Modern gaming hardware allowed the team to refine the characters’ performances, capturing the complex emotions that bring to life the protagonists, Detective Edward Carnby and Emily Heartwood, voiced by Hollywood stars David Harbor and Jodie Comer, respectively. Their individual reactions to environments and unique story moments provide a fresh interpretation of their journey, providing a distinctly immersive experience.

Edward and Emily are on a joint mission to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of Emily’s uncle, Jeremy Heartwood. Their motives differ – Edward’s professional curiosity and business prospects drive him forward, while Emily strives to find her missing relative and lift a family curse. Their interactions with the residents of Derceto Manor and their individual past traumas color their in-game actions.

David Harbor brings his role as Edward with intensity and hilarity, expertly portraying the character’s reactions to horrific situations and adding a touch of dry wit. An Olivier Award, BAFTA, and Emmy Award winning actress, Jodie Comer portrays Emily with exceptional brilliance, her anxiety over her missing uncle and the looming dread of a family curse. These displays, along with the possibility of replayability through both character’s perspective, create a captivating experience for players.

The game’s soundtrack, created by doom-jazz legend Jason Cohnen, captures the game’s 1920s Louisiana atmosphere. It reflects the turmoil of the period and the spooky essence of the game, combining nostalgia with modernity to create another soundscape.

To give players a preview of the game, a free playable intro is now available. It allows players to step into the shoes of Grace Saunders, a character from Alone in the Dark 2, and experience a glimpse of the horror that awaits inside Derceto Manor.
