The Civilization 6 Leader Pass introduces a new slice of content for fans of one of the best 4X games. Unfortunately, it’s also causing chaos as the update has broken things for a portion of the game’s player base, with many users reporting being unable to load Civ 6 on their PC running Windows, MacOS, or Linux operating systems, including Proton. Developer Firaxis has released an update for the strategy game that seems to have resolved the issue for some, but many are reporting that they still can’t join matches, or that DLC is missing when they do.

Among the reported issues was also an issue with the rights to the Leader Pass, which is free for players who purchased Civilization 6 Anthology or owned all of the Civ 6 DLC on the Steam or Epic Games store. This was not being recorded in some cases, with the official Civ Twitter account reporting that the issue has now been resolved and should be implemented for all eligible players, though he notes that this “may still take some time.”

It seems that an update released after the initial issues that followed the release of the Leader Pass resolved the issues of some players not being able to open the game, but many players in a long thread on the Steam forums. report that They still can’t open the game. Others say that they can load into Civ 6 just fine, but that it only shows the base version of the game without any purchased DLC included.

The publisher of Civilization 6 on MacOS, Aspyr, has published a message helping gamers on Mac systems to resolve issues that cause the game to not launch properly. This involves going through file verification and forcing it to run through system security settings. It is certainly an awkward solution.

Not being able to open a game is frustrating at the best of times, but it’s certainly even more unfortunate when it happens after new content has been released, and especially when it seems like the content update itself could be the root cause. Players on the forum and responding to developers on Twitter seem to be mainly asking Firaxis to acknowledge that it is working on a fix for the issue.

In the meantime, you might want to try uninstalling all your Civ 6 mods to see if that fixes the problem.
