Angelica Stasolla, the daughter of famed Star Wars writer, Tom Veitch, has started a GoFundMe fundraiser to support Veitch’s widow, Martha, temporarily, while Stasolla works out arrangements for her mother’s care in the wake of her father’s tragic death from COVID, at the age of 80.

Veitch was a noted Star Wars writer whose Dark Empire comic book miniseries (with artist Cam Kennedy, who Veitch had previously collaborated with on the Epic series, The Light and Darkness War) essentially rescued Star Wars as a comic book property, as Marvel Comics passed on the project, leading to Veitch and Kennedy taking the Star Wars license (with George Lucas’ express permission) to Dark Horse Comics, where Star Wars comics flourished for over twenty years. Veitch also wrote underground comic books and had a run on Animal Man following Grant Morrison’s legendary run on the series. Now, his widow needs help from Veitch’s many fans.

Stasolla wrote on the GoFundMe page, “My name is Angelica, and I am the daughter of Thomas Veitch. He was loved and admired by many in the Star Wars and comics world. Unfortunately he was taken by Covid before he could finish all his arrangements. His widow Martha needs help to keep their house and bills taken care of, and she is in need of home medical care as well. I am very worried about how she will manage alone and without his income until I can find a place she can afford near me. I and my mother would be so grateful.”

She added, “Many have reached out to ask how they can help and I hadn’t realized how many wonderful people cared about my father until now. Unfortunately the wealth generated by popular writing and entertainment does not always trickle down to the writers, artists and creators.”

Among the donations, friends and fans also shared their respects to Veitch, including Mike Beidler, a military consultant for many Star Wars authors and a longtime friend of Veitch’s, who shared the following, “Tom was a great friend with whom I shared much. As a young mid-20s Naval Aviator and die-hard Star Wars fan, I collaborated with him on his “Star Wars: Dark Empire” saga and wrote the foreword to his more-recent hardcover collection of “The Light and Darkness War” series. Many emails and phone calls over the decades, sharing manuscripts and ideas, working on film treatments together, talking theology and speculating about spiritual things, and just enjoying each other’s intellectual company. I last saw Tom in 2018 and spent an afternoon in Vermont with him and Martha. I will miss him greatly. There will definitely be a Tom Veitch-shaped hole in my heart until I join the Force and see him again face-to-face.”
