DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn teases that the fan-favorite Green Lantern Corps is part of his long-term roadmap for the evolving DC Universe.


DC Studios co-head James Gunn has apparently teased a more prominent role for the Green Lanterns moving forward in the DC Universe.


Gunn recently celebrated American Thanksgiving on Twitter, sharing an image of several notable DC heroes enjoying a Thanksgiving feast. One fan noted that Green Lantern was absent from the image and commented, “There is no Green Lantern in this image, therefore I can confidently say that Gunn and Safran have no intention of adding that character to the DCU, this is a first.” “. [I] I’m 100% confident in that.” This resulted in Gunn responding to the fan, “Probably not a good scoop! Happy Thanksgiving!” As of this writing, it is unknown what Gunn and [Peter] Safran may be planning for the Green Lantern Corps.

Out of a handful of animated movies, 2011 Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds, has been the only live-action film to feature the Green Lantern Corps. The film opened to negative reviews and far underperformed at the box office, grossing $219 million against a production budget of $200 million. Warner Bros. had hoped to launch a shared universe with Green Lantern, but those plans were scrapped after the film’s critical and commercial failure. The DCU officially began two years later with Zack Snyder. Iron Man (2013).

Following the successful launch of the DCU with Iron ManWarner Bros. announced in July 2015 that Green Lantern Corps, a feature film starring Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart, was set for a June 2020 release. However, the project languished in development and was later removed from the WB release schedule. So far, the only Green Lantern to appear in a DCU movie is Yalan Gur, who appeared briefly in both cuts of League of Justice.

The Green Lantern TV show returns to square one

In addition to a possible DCU future, the Green Lanterns will appear in an upcoming self-titled live-action series on HBO Max. The project, developed by Greg Berlanti and Warner Bros. TV-based Berlanti Productions, recently underwent a massive creative overhaul, losing writer/showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith and leads Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine. The series has also shifted its focus from Green Lanterns Guy Gardner and Alan Scott to fan favorite John Stewart.

The creative review was reportedly unrelated to the recent appointment of Gunn and Safran as co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios. As of this writing, it is unknown if HBO Max Green Lantern The series will be merged with the DCU as Gunn and Safran are currently finalizing a long-term plan for the DCU that will span across movies, television, and animation.
