Winger Lele Abada could miss Celtic’s entire Champions League season after sustaining a thigh injury while training with Israel.
The 21-year-old has been a regular in the first team this season under Brendan Rodgers and started in Beating Rangers 1-0 At Ibrox in their final Scottish Premiership match.
He was called up to Israel’s squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Romania and Belarus but suffered an injury during training and missed both matches.
Manager Brendan Rodgers admitted this was a blow to the player who… He agreed to a new four-year deal On the day of the transfer deadline.
He said: “He went to London today for a scan. We think it will take about three to four months.”
“He picked it up at the end of training in shooting practice, so it’s a real shame for us because he did well during pre-season and as you can see, he’s started a lot of games since I’ve been here.
“We are really disappointed, but it is a team game for us, so we will have other players to join us.
“It was his thigh when they were shooting at the end of training. It looks like he injured his thigh muscle.
“He signed a new contract and looked happy. Of course, I was looking forward to continuing his development because he still has a lot of areas he can improve.
“It’s unfortunate, it’s a learning curve for him. He’ll work hard, hopefully he’ll come back and we’ll use him in the second part of the season.”
Rodgers had named Abada among his 25-man squad to participate in Celtic’s Champions League next season, where his first match will be away from home to Feyenoord on September 19.
Abada has scored 29 goals in 106 matches, most recently in Celtic’s 3-1 Scottish Premiership win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie in August.
He has also won five trophies with the club, including a treble last season, and was named Scotland Young Player of the Year in his first season.
