Last month, Nintendo revealed that longtime Mario voice actor Charles Martinet would no longer be voicing the character. The company stopped short of revealing who is taking over the role, though it did say we’ll find out in the upcoming release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which won’t feature Martinet as Mario.

Now, Nintendo has released a new one Video Together, Martinet and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto discuss the history of Mario, the character of Mario, and Martinet’s newest character, Mario Ambassador.

Shigeru Miyamoto: “Charles-san, it’s been a long time since I first met you and since then, we’ve enjoyed a long journey together through many games and projects involving Mario and his friends. You first voiced Mario in Super. The first Mario game in 1996 was Super Mario 64. Whenever we met, You always call me ‘Papa!’ And I remember shooting PR videos together, you visiting events, happily performing Mario’s voice for fans and putting smiles on people’s faces.

“You’ve always preferred to spread joy and I’m sure you’ll be a great Mario ambassador. To all of you watching, know that in this role, Charles will continue to travel the world and meet fans. Enjoy doing voices, signing autographs and interacting with you at events. Super Mario Bros. will be released in October.” Starting with Wonder, some Mario character voices are new, so please check them out.

“Charles-san, your dedicated effort, your talent, and your height, from where I remember you almost hitting your head at the entrance of a restaurant in Kyoto, all impressed me. I am so grateful for your thoughtfulness. Bringing our character to life with your voice. With Nintendo fans at events around the world. I look forward to seeing you enjoy the moments.

“And to all you Mario fans out there, we ask you to honor Charles-san with us and please look forward to seeing him in his new role. Thank you very much, Charles-san.”


Charles Martinet: “Thank you very much, Dad. Over the years, it’s been a privilege to be able to bring your amazingly wonderful characters to life. I am absolutely honored and delighted. thank you My favorite thing in the world is meeting Mario fans, fellow Mario fans like myself, because I’m so grateful for your happiness and joy and enthusiasm. What we’re here to do, or I think what I’m here to do is touch your heart, make you smile, make you smile and bring a little bit of that joy magic and that’s been an honor for many years and I look forward to continuing to bring that joy and our innocence through great games and It helps us to remember our happiness and our happiness.”
