South Africa’s Malcolm Marks has been ruled out of the remainder of the Rugby World Cup in France with a lingering knee injury.
Marks, who was not included in South Africa coach Jacques Nienaber’s squad to face Romania in Bordeaux on Sunday, pulled out of training on Wednesday after sustaining a knee injury.
With the Springboks having the luxury of an expanded 33-man squad in France for the international tournament, and adequate cover within the squad, he will not be replaced in the squad at this stage.
“First and foremost, we are extremely disappointed in Malcolm, and we wish him the best in his recovery,” Nienaber said.
“He has been working hard to be the best he can be for the Championship and it is tragic that his season has ended this way.
He added: “As a team, we will remain in contact with him, as we do with all injured players, and we will support him as much as we can during the recovery process.”
“We have enough cover in the whore with Bunji [Mbonambi] And debts [Fourie] On the team while Marco [van Staden] He trained there as well and has been listed on all our team sheets so far as an option hooker.
“We will assess our needs for the rest of the tournament and confirm who we will call up as an additional player later this week.”
The Springboks will be hoping the news does not halt their good start to the World Cup campaign, as they hope to follow up their 18-3 win over Scotland with victory over Romania on Sunday.
