Sea of Stars Level Up Guide – Best Bonus Stats For All Characters

Screenshot by Steam Game Guides

All characters have set paths and/or things they’re good at. As such, their stats will always grow at a fixed amount with every level up. However, Sea of Stars gives you the opportunity to allocate a bonus stat with each level up for all characters. If you’re looking to build everybody optimally and prepare for battle, here’s a quick leveling guide to help.

Best stats for all characters in Sea of Stars

Sabotage already revealed that there will be six playable characters in the game, so that’s not a detail I’m going to hide. What I am hiding is who the second set of people are, just so you can enjoy the surprises. So, once you’ve reached the spoiler line, remember to stop reading!

Zale

Zale is an all-rounder type of character. He can heal, deal good damage, and unleash moderately powerful magic at a small group of enemies. Even his defenses are kind of high! The best stats to give Zale early in the game are definitely Mana Points (MP) and Magic. Sunball costs a lot of MP to use and heals scale with Magic. Once you get more people into the party, feel free to scale whatever stat you want.

Valere

Valere is a battle monk type of character—she hits extremely hard but at the cost of low defenses. Your first priority should always be Physical Attack (because even her crescent slash scales with PA). After that, be sure to scale MP whenever it’s an available option in preparation for Lunar Shield. It’s a lifesaver!

Personally, Valere’s defense stats are too low for you to waste your level up bonus on them. More HP is better, anyway, and you can just give her better armor as you travel.

Garl

Garl’s stats really shocked me because they were… so high! Since Garl is no Solstice Warrior, he doesn’t have magic, but he does get Nourish—the thing that does bigger heals for a bigger MP cost. Still, that’s no reason to scale Magic for him, as Zale’s can eventually be built up for healing. Instead, add Physical Attack and MP during level ups. Garl deals awesome damage, and his combo moves will only become more potent with enough firepower.

Serai

You can actually build Serai in two ways: pure DPS or delay supporter. However, as a utility slave, I say build her for the latter. As such, boost Serai’s MP, so she always has enough mana for Disorient. If you haven’t been spamming it already, like me, it’s one of the most useful moves in Sea of Stars. One kick bumps down an enemy’s lock-protected turn from “1” back to “3.” It even works on bosses!

If MP is not available in the current selection, just bump Physical Attack. Venom Flurry, which is, in my opinion, the easiest one to spam extra hits on (no shade to Valere’s boomerang), is completely dependent on this stat.

WARNING: Stop! Beyond this line are BIG spoilers. I highly recommend you come back when you’ve met them!

Resh’an

Every RPG has one full-fledged mage in their party, and in Sea of Stars, that’s Resh’an. Therefore, the stats he absolutely needs are pretty straightforward: MP and Magic, with higher priority over MP if you see it as an option. This is because of his arguably most useful skill, Ebb, which costs a painful 8 MP to cast. If you’re out of turns but need to break the enemy’s lock ASAP, a perfectly-timed Ebb can unlock two weaknesses. You will also want all that MP for a series of main story quests where you’ll be leaning on Resh’an for support.

B’st

Personally, I think B’st is best built similarly to Valere: as a pure Physical Attack damage dealer. It’s also the easiest stat to scale using accessories. For example, I have that Assassin’s Pin accessory on mine, which boosts attack for a very big hit on defense (which he can take—just look at his stats!). However, B’st does contain skills that deal both Physical and Magic damage, making it a good idea to scale the latter as a secondary stat.

Bs’t doesn’t need MP. I would cook food that can revive a knocked-out party member rather than have them use Warble. They’re definitely DPS material!

This late in the game, your team should be plenty powerful to take on most things. You should also have all the proper relics, accessories, and other unique items that can scale stats better than any level up bonus.
