Behind-the-scenes photos from Disney+’s Secret Invasion provide a look at one of the Skrulls that will appear in the series.

One of four images from the set of the Marvel Studios series shows the back of an actor’s head wearing a prosthetic that is clearly the green head of a Skrull, a shapeshifting alien first introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain Marvel. The other photos feature the crew, as well as an underwater stage and a damaged police car.

Secret Invasion is a six-episode miniseries based on the 2008 Marvel Comics storyline of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis, Leinil Francis Yu, Mark Morales and Laura Martin. The storyline, which consisted of eight issues, saw the Skrulls use their shapeshifting abilities to invade Earth and secretly assume the identities of several superheroes. The Skrulls were formally introduced to the MCU in 2019’s Captain Marvel, and Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos and fellow Skrull Soren, portrayed by Sharon Blynn, returned briefly for a post-credit scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Secret Invasion will reportedly wrap filming soon, though this has not been confirmed by Marvel Studios. The series has been filming throughout the United Kingdom, reportedly under the working title “Jambalaya,” with locations including London, Leeds, Huddersfield, and Halifax. While few details are known about the plot of the Marvel Studios series, other set images teased that at least one scene will take place in Russia.

Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his MCU role as Nick Fury for the series, with a recent set video reuniting him and Mendelsohn after the two appeared together in Captain Marvel, which took place in the 1990s. Jackson has shared several updates from the Secret Invasion set, with the most recent showing him without Fury’s signature eyepatch. Along with the photo, Jackson’s caption read, “Patch, no patch, no scar, no scar. Old School Fury Day, gotta find the Groove!” This led to speculation that the series would feature flashbacks to a younger Fury earlier in the MCU timeline.

Secret Invasion will see Jackson reprise his MCU role as Nick Fury, as well as Mendelsohn as Talos and Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D agent Maria Hill. The cast also includes Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, and Carmen Ejogo who are set to appear in undisclosed roles, though it was reported that Ben-Adir would appear as a central antagonist.

While it’s currently unclear when the Secret Invasion miniseries will release on Disney+, the next Marvel series to hit the streaming service will be Moon Knight starring Oscar Isaac, which will premiere on March 30.

Secret Invasion will arrive on Disney+ sometime in 2022. A premiere date has not been announced.
