Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor on Smallville, says he wants to join the next season of James Gunn’s Peacemaker.

On Twitter, Gunn posted confirmation Peacemaker would return for Season 2 on HBO Max, thanking those who supported the production, including its cast and crew. Rosenbaum replied with his congratulations on the show’s renewal, adding, “I want to come play next season.” This is by no means a guarantee or announcement of Rosenbaum’s casting. Instead, it’s simply the actor expressing his desire to join the DC Extended Universe show.

Airing for ten seasons between 2001 and 2011, Smallville followed a young Clark Kent/Superman in the titular town and proved a ratings juggernaut for The WB and its successor, The CW. The series, which was developed by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, introduced and explored a number of key characters in the Superman mythos and continued on in comic book series.

Rosenbaum made his debut in Smallville Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot.” The actor departed Smallville after seven seasons due to wanting to try different roles. Rosenbaum later returned for the series finale. Since leaving Smallville, Rosenbaum has had roles in such projects as 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and 2018’s Lego DC Super-Villains video game. He also hosts the Inside of You podcast.

Set after the events of 2021’s The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker follows the titular vigilante, also known as Christopher Smith (John Cena). In the series, Smith teams up with A.R.G.U.S. to stop an invasion from butterfly-like parasites that take over the bodies of human beings. Along the way, Peacemaker must also contend with his racist father, the supervillain Auggie Smith/White Dragon (Robert Patrick).

Peacemaker proved a success following its release on HBO Max. Currently, the series holds a 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the best-reviewed DCEU project on the review aggregator. In terms of viewership, the Peacemaker finale had the highest single-day performance for any HBO Max original series.

Details regarding Peacemaker Season 2 are scare at this time. Recently, Gunn debunked rumors that Bane was in the series’ sophomore season, saying even he doesn’t fully know what’s coming at this time. Still, Cena is expected to reprise his role as Peacemaker, and it’s likely at least a few of his A.R.G.U.S. allies will also appear.

Peacemaker is available to stream now on HBO Max. At the time of writing, Peacemaker Season 2 does not have a release date.
