WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Snowpiercer Season 3, Episode 3, “The First Blow,” now available on TNT.

Season 3 of Snowpiercer promised all-out war and that arrived in devastating fashion during the latest episode. Layton (played by Daveed Diggs) finally got his breakaway train near Wilford’s Big Alice, and even though Wilford had a powerful weapon in his arsenal, Layton made good on his vow to claim the Eternal Engine once more. But while they returned democracy to the ark and put the dictator in his place, the victory came at a heavy cost.

Layton and his team discovered in “The First Blow” that one of their longtime allies was killed during the long-awaited battle. Not only did this emotional death leave the Resistance without an important source of support, it also meant that Snowpiercer wouldn’t be able to provide answers to the show’s most important mystery, at least for now.

The fallen hero was Strong Boy, the giant who helped the Resistance when they were fighting Melanie’s Jackboots. He remained quite an asset even after Melanie and most of her team switched sides, with his muscle intimidating Wilford’s fellowers. However, those same followers overpowered Strong Boy and got him arrested in Season 3, leaving him at the mercy of Wilford’s right-hand man Kevin. Kevin froze and broke off Strong Boy’s fingers one by one, trying to get him to identify the other rebels still on the train — but Strong Boy refused to name anyone.

Kevin then took things to another extreme by deciding that since Strong Boy was staying silent, he’d also freeze and remove his tongue. Later in “The First Blow,” members of the Resistance were found paying tribute to Strong Boy’s pale, frozen corpse. Snowpiercer didn’t make it clear if the freezing session killed him or if Kevin murdered him purely out of spite, but he was definitely dead — and with Kevin likewise meeting his end during the coup, Pike couldn’t even get revenge for his friend’s death.

The death of Strong Boy was a massive blow to both Layton and Pike because they loved him like a brother; they’d been working together since the day they all boarded the train. His absence might even come back to haunt them later since Layton has his own rebels to contend with. Even some of his closest allies are unsure about him despite their important victory.

But the plot twist also meant the mystery about Strong Boy’s language ability would never be fully resolved. After he was put in the Drawers and recovered in Season 1, he was suddenly speaking Mandarin — leaving fans wondering if the Drawers transplanted memories into the minds of those asleep. It’s possible that Snowpiercer might revisit the idea of the Drawers affecting people later in Season 3, since Layton now has a choice about whether or not to put Wilford in one of them. But the only closure viewers will get for Strong Boy’s individual story is knowing that he stayed loyal to the Resistance all the way to the end of his journey.
