WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Snowpiercer Season 3, Episode 4, “Bound by One Track,” now available on TNT.

Season 3 of Snowpiercer has finally given Layton (Daveed Diggs) the ultimate victory with the rebel leader reclaiming the Eternal Engine from Wilford (Sean Bean). Still, as much as he’d like to kill the despot, he has to keep Wilford alive for his expertise and to show he’s a lot more benevolent.

Layton can’t risk being a dictator because it’d be hypocritical of him, plus Wilford’s loyalists would surely start yet another civil war aboard the 1,029 cars. However, as much as Layton is trying to keep the dictator safe and sound, the latest episode dealt Wilford a dangerous blow and it almost crushed the train.

Layton had Asha lie about being a survivor from New Eden, all to get the train to vote to go to that hotspot. However, they soon found the main track blocked by cars, which Alexandra revealed were dumped by Wilford in the past. It was his way of thinning out the herd, selecting the strong and culling folks so they’d have more resources and less people.

It killed her friends but Alex eventually warmed to Wilford because she needed a parent. Unfortunately, while she and Ben got over this drama, they needed Wilford’s intel on how to remove rail clamps to clear a path. But when Layton went to an imprisoned Wilford on behalf of these engineers, he found him bleeding and going into shock.

It turns out, Roche entered the cell and the former Brakeman leader stabbed Wilford with a syringe containing sleeping agent they used in the Drawers. Roche had just been awakened after he and his family got placed in the slumber during Layton’s previous rebellion, bitter and depressed over how his wife, Anne, died in the sleep. His daughter, Carly, was now acting out, so Roche — who lost two other girls during the Great Freeze — decided to get retribution.

It broke Layton because now he had to cover up for another buddy, but luckily, Alex saved the day. She figured out the clamps, which meant they didn’t have to reverse and find a new path. This would have pushed them back weeks, which Layton didn’t want as he could tell Asha was struggling to keep the lie up.

Still, he’s got a ton on his plate because he’ll have to keep Roche’s secret to ensure Wilford’s followers don’t rise up antagonized. All this disorder is why Pike’s trying to goad Ruth to take over from Layton, so Layton will have to watch his back. Thankfully, Wilford’s alive but in critical condition, which means any one of Layton’s enemies could use this as a trump card to smear his name should they want to stir more chaos on the Great Ark.

See how Layton tries to keep Wilford safe in Season 3 of Snowpiercer, with new episodes airing Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TNT.
