Alfred Molina first portrayed Dr. Otto Octavius in 2004’s Spider-Man 2, which saw him become the evil Doctor Octopus after a fusion reactor accident destroyed the inhibitor chip in the robotic arms he developed to help handle tritium. The film ended with Doc Ock regaining control of his mind and sacrificing himself by sending the reformed reactor into the East River.

Much to the surprise of Marvel fans, it was reported in December 2020 that Molina would reprise the role in No Way Home, and the actor himself confirmed his involvement the following April. “When we were shooting it, we were all under orders not to talk about it, because it was supposed to be some great big secret,” Molina said. “But, you know, it’s all over the internet. I actually described myself as the worst kept secret in Hollywood! It was wonderful. It was very interesting going back after 17 years to play the same role, given that in the intervening years, I now have two chins, a wattle, crow’s feet and a slightly dodgy lower back.” These comments seemingly frustrated Marvel Studios President/Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige, who hoped to keep the return a secret.

Of course, Molina wasn’t alone, as he’d ultimately be joined by Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx’s Max Dillon/Electro, Thomas Haden Church’s Flint Marko/Sandman and Rhys Ifans’ Dr. Curt Conners/Lizard from the Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man film franchises. Moreover, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprised their respective Peter Parkers to assist Tom Holland’s Spidey in a battle of multiversal proportions.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now in theaters.
