Wentworth will host the first world championship in TV production as the 2023 BMW PGA Championship will be “fully powered by green hydrogen”, resulting in zero carbon emissions.
Wentworth will host the first world championship in TV production as the 2023 BMW PGA Championship will be “fully powered by green hydrogen”, resulting in zero carbon emissions.
History will be made on the DP World Tour this week, as the BMW PGA Championship becomes the first sporting event to have its television production run entirely on green hydrogen.
European Tour Productions and IMG are working with UK-based clean energy company GeoPura to supply two hydrogen-powered generators (HPUs) that will be placed on the sixth fairway at the Wentworth Club.
It is estimated that relying on HPUs will save a total of 16.4 tons of CO2 compared to the 2022 tournament. They are used in place of highly polluting diesel generators and leave water as the only by-product, meaning they produce no emissions.

In a world-first sporting event, the production led by European Tour Productions and IMG will be powered 100% on green hydrogen, with zero emissions.
The GeoPura HPU runs on green hydrogen, produced through renewable energy sources, to generate emissions-free electricity which is used to power the broadcast complex.
Golf carts used in Rolex Series event, Live from Thursday on Sky SportsTo transport people and equipment across the site, they will also be recharged using electricity generated via hydrogen for the first time.
These innovative developments form another part of the DP World Tour’s Green Drive initiative, which has made the tour the first professional golf tour to commit to being completely net-zero carbon by 2040.
Richard Bone, Managing Director of European Tour Productions, said: “We are always looking for new technologies that will enable us to reach net zero carbon by 2040. Hydrogen is the future of energy distribution and has the added benefit of being more flexible than diesel units because it has parts Less animated.

Europe’s all-star Ryder Cup competes in the BMW PGA Championship, the premier event on the DP World Tour calendar, with expanded coverage live on Sky Sports Golf.
“Making this leap, the first of its kind in our industry, in such a high-profile Rolex Series tournament is a big statement. This is just the beginning, and the plan is to spread hydrogen power across multiple tournaments in 2024.”
In collaboration with IMG, European Tour Productions produces live coverage of DP World Tour events around the world, working alongside Sky Sports in the UK and NBC Golf Channel as producer of the coverage in the US.

Other sustainability-focused broadcast innovations include experimenting with remote production for the first time this season. To date, five tournaments on the DP World Tour 2023 schedule have been produced remotely from European Tour Productions’ headquarters at IMG Studios in Stockley Park, each saving around 87 tonnes of CO2.
