In a recent announcement on Twitter, game development studio Naughty Dog revealed a delay in the release of the long-awaited multiplayer game The Last of Us. In an open letter to the game’s enthusiastic fanbase, Naughty Dog stated, “We’re very proud of the work our studio has done so far, but as development continues, we’ve realized that what’s best for the game is to give it more time.”

This isn’t the first bump in the road for multiplayer. During The Last of Us Day 2019, Naughty Dog acknowledged the significant growth of the multiplayer mode initially planned for The Last of Us Part II, which has outgrown the scope that can be combined with the game. The studio reassured fans that “you will finally experience the fruits of our team’s ambition online… when and where that will be realized remains to be determined.”

As Last of Us 2020 arrived, Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog, teased fans with a cryptic tweet that made reference to the game’s multiplayer, saying, “Thank you to all the amazing fans for the amazing #TheLastofUsDay! Your positivity and love is incredibly inspiring. Oh.. And about that other thing…be patient. It’ll be worth it.”

During The Last of Us Day 2021, the studio confirmed that they’re “working on it – we’re seeing community feedback as a lot of you are asking for multiplayer mode and wanting updates.” They assured fans that they were happy with what the team was developing, but wanted to allow the necessary time to achieve the project’s ambitious goals.

At Summer Game Fest 2022, Druckmann confirmed that the multiplayer will be self-contained and as intrinsic as any of Naughty Dog’s single-player games. He described a story that features new characters set in San Francisco, California, and an “enormous scope and massive world”. He also confirmed that the game’s design will be an “invitation to new players” while still providing “an exciting challenge for more… [their] Seasoned fans.”

Druckmann also revealed that Naughty Dog veterans Vineet Agarwal, Anthony Newman, and Joseph Bettinnati were leading the project. He concluded, “You’ll be hearing a lot more about this game next year.”

True to his word, Druckmann reiterated on The Last of Us Day 2022 that more details about the ambitious The Last of Us Online game will be revealed in 2023. In early 2023, he shared another piece of concept art and echoed the promise more details would be revealed. during the year.
