US Open 2022: Serena Williams wins first round of her Farewell Tour

Since she had not played at Wimbledon for a year, she had lost three of the four matches she had played there.

But she was back home at the US Open on Monday night.

Serena Williams beat Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3 in her last match, which was four weeks before she turned 41.

Williams has won 107 matches in New York, and 102 of them have been at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with almost half of them happening at night.

She is already set to play doubles with her older sister Venus later this week.

But Serena has already played another singles match. On Wednesday, she played No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit.

The excitement will be huge, just like Williams' legacy.

There was a roaring and sometimes soaring crowd at sold-out Ashe.

The crowd set an all-time night-session attendance record for an opening night with 29,402 fans.

The crowd was there for her every step of the way.

Williams is only the fourth woman in the Open Era to win matches as a teenager, in her 20s, 30s, and 40s.
