Rory McIlroy has given his Ryder Cup preparations a big boost by holing the final hole of his second round at the BMW PGA Championship to avoid the cut at Wentworth.

McIlroy needed a birdie on the par-5 18th to extend the championship, as he produced a brilliant drive and approached the iron before putting it in two to move to -1 for the round and overall.

The Northern Irishman was once again bested by his playing partner – and European Ryder Cup teammate – Ludwig Aberg, with the 23-year-old also birdying the final hole to move into a share of the lead with fellow Swede Sebastian Soderberg at -10.

McIlroy’s round and many others ended in near total darkness as fog delays earlier Friday and slow play led to a chaotic and surreal finish.

Ludwig Aberg shines as he hits his shot from an awkward spot on the edge of the green to make birdie!

First-round leader Marcus Helgekilde was one of several players who will need to return to Wentworth to finish their second rounds on Saturday morning, with the Dane still in contention after being -8 after 14 holes.
