Carl Burke strengthened his hold on the juvenile filly division when Darnation ran off a ready winner of the Betfred May Hill Stakes at Doncaster.
Fallen Angel had already made her case as the leading two-year-old filly when she impressed in the Moyglare Stud Stakes in Ireland last weekend.
It now looks like one of her biggest rivals for the top honors may be based in the same Leyburn yard in North Yorkshire after Darnation’s price for next year’s 1,000 Guineas was halved from 20 seconds to 10-1 by Coral.
Impressive on soft ground last time out in the Group Three at Goodwood, she had fewer questions to answer than most rivals, and when one of her market rivals, Ollie Sangster’s Romanova, ended up going to the post and ran enthusiastically in the early stages, there was one less To worry.
He followed See The Fire Darnation and looked to be a danger, but Clifford Lee was able to hold his own slightly and was the 11-10 favorite bounded by three lengths.
“They didn’t go very fast, and when I asked her, she accelerated well for a few steps and then ran towards the line,” Lee said.
“She is very good and I would like to see her next year when she is stronger physically and mentally.
“She handles that soft ground, she keeps herself in very good condition and she has a bit of a shoe as well, so next year we’ll see how we progress.”
Burke was not on track, but said: “She’s a class filly, and on this ground she’s very good. We’ll have to see how she does on faster ground but she’s strong, and she’s staying and she’s very good.”
“She’s not in the filly race but she’s in the Prix Marcel Boussac. I haven’t spoken to the owners but she’ll probably get her place in France.
“Who knows about next year? It’s not the biggest in the world, but it should get stronger even if it doesn’t grow much, and if it hits soft ground it can become anything.”
“On fast ground, Fallen Angel will be ahead of her, but ground is key for this filly.
“I was ready to come today but I had a busy morning and decided not to. They don’t run any faster for me to be there!”
