Star Wars Jedi: Survivor physical version requires download to play

With the highly anticipated release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor fast approaching, players may be surprised to learn that physical copies of the game require a download before they can dive into the action. The PS5 game’s box art features a small disclaimer stating “Download Required” above the age rating, indicating that additional data must be installed before players can enjoy the game.

This download may be caused by the huge file size of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The PS5 game has a total file size of 147GB, which is much larger than the maximum capacity of a Blu-ray Disc, which holds around 100GB. Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind the game, could have chosen to include multiple discs to accommodate the size of the game, similar to how The Last of Us: Part II and Final Fantasy 7 Remake shipped on two discs. However, it appears that EA has chosen to rely on downloading instead.

Due to the potential size of the data on the disc, players will likely need to download up to 100GB before they can play the actual version of the game. This requirement may discourage some gamers, especially those with slow internet or bandwidth limits, from purchasing the Blu-ray version. Although day one patches are common in the gaming world, rarely does a game require such a large download.

One possible explanation for the extra download is the inclusion of a 4K texture pack. This texture pack can account for a significant portion of a game’s file size, as the base game itself is only about 44GB. It remains to be seen if this texture pack will be an optional download for players.

The story in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, a third-person action-adventure game developed by Respawn Entertainment in association with Lucasfilm Games, follows Cal Kestis’ story five years after the events of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. As one of the last surviving Jedi Knights, Cal has been pushed to the edge of the galaxy by the Empire and must face threats both new and familiar. As the galaxy falls deeper into darkness, Cale must decide how far he is willing to go to protect himself, his crew, and the legacy of the Jedi Order.

With a pre-load date of April 26 and a launch date of April 28, players should prepare for the base download that awaits them before they can experience the exciting continuation of Cal Kestis’ journey in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
