Tekken 8 adds newcomer Reina

Bandai Namco has released a new trailer for Tekken 8 revealing newcomer Reina as a playable character.

“Queen was a character conceived during Tekken 7“The development of history a decade ago”, Tekken 8 said director Kohei Ikeda in a PlayStation Blog Post. “She plays a vital role in Tekken 8The story of Darkness Awakens. Despite his elegant and charming appearance, he exudes a charismatic sense of evil, reflecting the duality of his character in both personality and fighting style.”

Here’s more about Reina, via Ikeda:

Attacks that reflect your personality and acrobatic movement based on Taido

Reina employs an acrobatic fighting style rooted in Taido, using fast and brutal techniques such as knife strikes, eye pokes, and scratches that reflect her character. She uses a special move called Sentai to quickly close distance and launch attacks, while Unsoku allows her to launch powerful attacks with agile footwork, demonstrating a fast and aggressive approach to combat. Furthermore, Reina has somehow acquired techniques such as Wind God Fist and Spinning Demon, synonymous with Mishima-style karate, and even exhibits a powerful fighter look, performing powerful moves from the Heaven’s Wrath stance once used by the now-deceased Heihachi. Her offensive abilities near walls, in particular, are among the strongest of all the characters.

Reina is a character that emphasizes duality in several aspects. To create a different counterpart to the powerful Mishima-style karate, we chose Taido as the second fighting style. The Taido is known for its elegant and fast movements, with sharp and agile attacks. In producing Reina’s Taido techniques, we collaborated with renowned expert Mr. Tetsuji Nakano, who won the World Taido Championships four times. Mr. Nakano not only has knowledge of Taido but also other martial arts. His advice on brutal techniques helped to further highlight the distinctive features and personality of Reina’s moves.

A design that emphasizes the duality of Reina’s character

We were eager to work with Ms. Mariko Shimazaki, who had previously contributed as a designer for characters such as Kazumi and Josie for Tekken 7. We approached her to handle the design during the early stages of brainstorming concepts and keywords for characters, despite giving her the challenging task of capturing the appearance of a genuine martial artist with a bold fighting style that combines elements of Taido and Mishima-style karate, while also being a young woman who appears somewhat mysterious and It has that duality. She delivered an exceptional design.

Thanks to the design proposals we received from Ms. Shimazaki, Reina’s grand direction was clear from the beginning. When creating the 3D model, we worked on incorporating elements related to its hidden background and its duality and how to shape it into an attractive design. Therefore, be attentive to these aspects.

Tekken 8 will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC via Steam on January 26, 2024.
