Mercedes is “optimistic” that the track layout at the Singapore Grand Prix will suit its car as it looks to return to the podium.
Ferrari was the team closest to Red Bull last time out at Monza, while George Russell and Lewis Hamilton increased their cars to finish fifth and sixth.
Monza is almost the exact opposite of the streets of Singapore, which rely more on high downforce and mechanical grip.
“There is reason to believe that the car will perform better because the Singapore circuit has maximum downforce,” explained Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes’ track engineering director.
He continued: “Our performance on high-downforce tracks such as in Barcelona, Budapest and even Zandvoort, the car was running well, and we had a very strong performance.”
“Hopefully we will be able to be a little faster there and get back into a position where we can compete for podiums. Although the track presents some very unique challenges, we also got some layout changes for this year. There is a four-corner sequence. Near the end of the lap it was removed as the track used to go down the runway through the tunnel.

“That’s gone now, so we’ve got a longer straight which will change a little bit how the tyres work. There’s a little bit less power there but it’s also abrasive tarmac. We’ve got three softer compounds so it’s pretty tough racing on the tyres, and it’s also a bumpy street circuit.
He added, “In addition, the race is held at night. There are a lot of challenges that we have to face at that time, but we will go there with the optimism of a strong performance.”

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has hit back at Lewis Hamilton’s claim that Max Verstappen has not risen to the challenge of racing against his strong teammates.
Mercedes is in second place in the Constructors’ Championship, 45 points behind Ferrari and 56 points behind Aston Martin, before this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.
Hamilton and Russell have not been on the podium since the British Grand Prix in mid-July, but they showed strong performances at Hungary and Zandvoort, circuits that rely less on straight-line speed.
Team principal Toto Wolff says Mercedes is “making improvements” and hopes to be on Red Bull’s tail in Singapore.
