New leaked images of the PS5 Slim’s detachable disc drive reveal that it will require internet for pairing

Earlier this month, Sony revealed new slim models of its PlayStation 5 hardware. Both the disc drive and the digital model are getting updates, but along with this news, the company also revealed a new detachable disc drive. This optional drive can be added to the new Slim model of the Digital PS5, turning it into a console that can use discs. However, it seems that internet connection is required to use this drive.

Some images of the presumably upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Slim PS5 bundle have leaked online (thanks, Charlier Intl) and in the small text on the box, it says “Internet connection required to pair disc drive and PS5 console upon launch”.

Many players and video game purveyors are not keen on the online requirement, as the day may come when the optional accessory becomes useless when the console and disc drive attachment servers are offline. Given the text on the box, an Internet connection is a one-time thing, only needed to pair the disc drive with the console, but it’s unclear whether it’s needed after that.

Game Informer Reached out to Playstation to ask about the internet connection requirement and if more connectivity is required than the initial setup; We’ll update this story if we learn more.

The same leaked images you can see above also point to an unannounced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III PS5 Slim bundle that comes with the console, DualSense controller, and game.
