Super Mario RPG Preview – Link and Donkey Kong Still Cameo in Super Mario RPG Remake?

In the 90s, Nintendo played fast and loose with its library of characters. Sometimes Yoshi appeared in The Legend of Zelda, and Kirby was whatever color he felt like at the time, be it gray or pink. In 1996, that laissez-faire attitude took full effect with the release of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the Super Nintendo. Link, Samus, and Donkey Kong (sort of) all had unexplained cameos in the game, and one of my biggest questions about the remake is whether or not it will continue. If you’re ready to learn the answers to some of them, read on!

Impressively, the answer is yes! At least for Link and Donkey Kong. I haven’t been able to play the game where Samus appears, so I can’t answer that question yet. When you get close to Link after seeing him in the sleeping bed, a “Speak” option will appear and when you click on it, the Zelda musical Sting will play.

It’s always been questionable whether or not Donkey Kong’s cameo is him, as he’s labeled a “guerrilla”, but he definitely looks like Donkey Kong with a crown.

Super Mario RPG Remake was released on November 17th for the Nintendo Switch.
