Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslau said the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was “disappointing” for the company. He said this during Warner Bros. Discovery’s Q1 financial results call, which reportedly saw its games revenue drop a lot compared to last year. IGN.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will never do well compared to last year’s revenue for Warner Bros.’s Discovery Gaming division, which is anchored by the release of Hogwarts Legacy, the best-selling and non-first game in 2023. – Call of Duty game to take that spot over the years. After Zaslav called the game disappointing, Warner Bros. Discovery chief financial officer Gunnar Weidenfels said, “Starting with the studios, the $400 million-plus year-over-year decline in Q1 is primarily due to the toughest (competition) we’ve faced in games. Against the success of Hogwarts Legacy in the first quarter last year , we were weakened this past quarter with the disappointing Suicide Squad release, which resulted in a $200 million impact to EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) in the first quarter.”
It’s lost a lot of money, and given the state of the games industry this year, it’s hard not to worry about the state of Suicide Squad post-Rocksteady. With studios closing left and right and over 10,000 employees laid off in the games industry this year, it’s not surprising (however heartbreaking) to see Rocksteady go through job cuts. Here’s hoping they don’t.
