Xbox’s Activision opens new studio to develop narrative-driven triple-A franchise

Activision, the developer-publisher Microsoft and Xbox bought last year for $69 billion, has created a new studio called Elsewhere Entertainment, which is developing a new “narrative-driven and genre-defining AAA franchise.” The studio is based in Warsaw, Poland, and according to the report IGNIt’s not working on a Call of Duty-related project.

Formed behind the scenes ahead of today’s public unveiling, the studio arrives roughly a week after Xbox shuttered four Bethesda studios, including Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks and Redfall team Arcane Austin. Although the company has yet to directly address the closures publicly, Xbox president Sarah Bond said in an interview that the closures will keep the business healthy in the long run. That’s why news of this new studio may come as a surprise, given that just over a week ago, Activision’s parent company was closing studios to cut costs.

“Built from the ground up, Elsewhere Entertainment is a premier and independent studio dedicated to creating environments that inspire bold and diverse ideas,” a Blog post reads “The team’s underlying mission encourages everyone to creatively explore and collaborate to shape a franchise with a lasting legacy that resonates beyond the games. (The) new studio has full access to Activision’s resources and tools as it ramps up production and development.”

“Opening its search elsewhere for best-in-class talent across the industry and around the world to help create a cutting-edge and next-generation gaming experience.”

Elsewhere is currently made by developers with experience working on franchises such as The Last of Us, Uncharted, The Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077, Destiny, Tom Clancy’s The Division, and Far Cry.
